Washington State has the second highest earthquake risk in the nation and seventy percent of schools are in high seismic areas.
Newer building construction codes include earthquake provisions but there are no requirements to seismically update all existing older school buildings. Many districts can’t seismically update their older schools because they cannot pass bonds/capital levies.
The state legislature funded the Washington State Department of Natural Resources School Seismic Safety Project. The results show buildings evaluated received a one-star (out of 5) rating, 93% of 561 buildings evaluated are in danger of partial or total collapse by design level earthquake. This evaluation only included 12% of school buildings in our state.
It is not acceptable to mandate our kids to attend school in buildings at risk of collapse during an earthquake. Now that we have the seismic safety project results, we need state legislators fund school seismic safety.
This Bill SB5933 will fund seismic safety grants at 500 million after a vote of the public. This is a start and there is more work to do.
